Spaying is more difficult since the removal of uterus and ovaries requires that not only do they have to cut open the skin and some membranes, but several layers of muscle must be cut through in order to reach the organs. Those muscles then have to be sewn back together, and I would think it would pull and hurt just trying to get up, stand and sit, much like after a c-section in a human. With neutering, it is basically the incision of skin and maybe some membranes, much simpler.
