I would say yes, removing the ovaries and uterus is much harder on a female dog than removing the testicles on a male dog.

Recovery depends on the dog. Usually activity is restricted the first 24 hours and strenuous activity, running and jumping are discouraged for up to 2 weeks for both females and males.
