I dont know much about Canon as I shoot Nikon. But 50mm prime is great, however depending on what you are shooting, it can be not as practical. It will give you the background effect (called boca, if you want to sound proffesional ) but I find for moving subjects a prime is not practical simply because YOU must move and can't adjust the lens. The 18-55 kit will not give you that effect as it has a very low aperture range. I reccomend buying a body ONLY and getting the a recommendation from the store and what would fit your purposes lens wise. Trust me, as a proffesional photographer, I NEVER us my 18-55mm. You will outgrow it so quickly!!
