I have a Fourche Terrier (Yorkie/Westie Hybrid) whose ears started smelling a little weird a couple of months ago (they were also slightly red & itched). We took her to the vet, he diagnosed her with food allergies and suggested we only feed her dog food with 1 or 2 ingredients rather than a food like Beneful (what she was eating)which is great for dogs, unless they have food allergies. Tractor supply has dog food with few ingredients, it's a little pricey, but it works. Gabby's ears were cleared up in just a few days.

This may or may not help, but it's worth looking into.

I also us Vet Solutions and occasionally ear drops from the vet when she gets ahold of something she shouldn't have or stays outside too long (which also triggers her allergies).
