I wouldn't ever use a collar to walk a Yorkie. Their trachea's are too sensitive. Even my big boy Jackson (16lbs) has a sensitive neck so I only walk him in a harness.

He does wear a collar nearly 24/7 with ID tags but the harness goes on for walks.

Puppies usually don't like them. You just have to let them get used to it. I probably wouldn't leave it on in a crate just in CASE it gets caught on something, but a lot of people leave them on w/o problems.
