I use the spray during use,(usually once or twice per dog) which cleans and lubricates. I have the blade cleaner which I use when I am finished and I oil them after I clean them. The manufacturer recommends cleaning them before the first use as they are coated with something ( I can't remember what) From my research the blades will stay sharp and last so much longer if you keep them cleaned and oiled. I have used mine a total of 7 times (3 on Jada and 3 on Bogie and did my Mom's Biewer Jazzy) my blades still cut as good as new and like I said never get hot. I also read somewhere to never use your clippers on a dirty dog it will dull the blades.
