I usually end up trying to get people to pet Princess. She's usually so geeked that someone is near she starts wagging & jumping a mile a minute. I want her to become familiar with both new people and being calm in a "social setting". People don't always know what she wants so they don't know if she's on the attack or what & will sometimes back away slowly.
If she was uncomfortable with the contact I would definitely tell them they can't pet her. I've always asked before letting myself or my daughter pet someone's dog & I think it's common courtesy for others to do the same. I think I'd rather come off as a little rude than deal with my dog biting or scaring someone or getting worked up itself.
