I think it all depends on how they are attached. We had a poodle whose dewclaw was barely attached, just kind of hanging there- it was removed when she was spayed to prevent later injury.
Chloe has her dewclaws and they are well secured- so I chose not to remove them- I keep them clipped and she has never had a problem.
