My daughter lives there with Buddha and I visit a lot. I love it and it is very dog friendly. She rents a 4 bedroom house with three other girls for $2500 a month. It is an expensive place to live as most places are in Southern California unfortunately.
Lots of colleges and college students at UCSB, the community college, etc. so there is a lot of competition for those kinds of jobs.
Santa Barbara itself is pretty small but there are other towns nearby like Ventura (half hour away) that have more reasonable housing, etc.
There is less expensive housing the areas around UCSB too ...a place called Isla Vista which my daughter would not consider living in because they party 24 hours a day there and that is just not her lifestyle.
