At 9 years old, your transition of adding a puppy might be a little more difficult. Ringo was four when we added Lucy and even he tired of the puppy antics rather quickly ~ your nine year old girl will too.
I second the idea of an opposite sex dog and perhaps an older dog if you can find one.
They will need their own spaces at first ~ your girl will need a place for peace and quiet where she can get away from the newcomer.
At some point, they may want to sleep in the same space but they may not.
Honestly, at 9, I'm not sure she will appreciate having to share you.
How is she around other dogs?
