HE is small, I free fed when I she was a puppy. It was easier and she was distracted with playing and would take a nibble here and there, he is very very young to be away from his mother and litter mates as the proper age is 12 weeks.
I would allow him to free feed and even add a little canned ( soft) food to his diet either at breakfast or dinner.
