I drove all the way to Asheville (5 hours from me), and when I got there , the dog she described was NOT the dog that I was looking at. She looked like death. My husband actually said she looks a dead dog only alive. She was in rotten shape. Underweight, her teeth horrible (a stage 3), and of course was in full blown heat. Well me with my bleeding heart, had to take her , I wasnt going to leave her in that condition. The girl claimed she thought the dog was fixed, blah blah blah. But the dog was in full blown heat. I later did my research and this chick turns out to be gasp...a BYB. found a website with Foxy on it, where she had numerous litters. She later mails me AKC papers, with some other dogs name on it and her supposed medical records. I am her 5th owner, and she hasnt seen a REAL vet since 2007. The vet records were from her original owners in Michigan and I am in NC> I was told she was 4, turns out shes over 5. So even though I got her from this lady I call her my rescue. Some might not agree with me, but I wouldnt sell her back to that lady for 1, 000 dollars. So thats the complete story, I obviously got her from a BYB, but its partly my fault because I didnt do better research and regardless I am glad that she is away from that woman. But now I deal with the consequences of not knowing her complete history, but I guess thats my fault. |
Here's some things you might want to consider before making your final decision:
Could she be with whelp, yep knowing the scenario surrounding on how you obtained her.
Should you abort the pups? That decision should be left up to your vet first and you 2nd. And should be dependent on your little girl's health. Being that she was emaciated and not in the best condition when you obtained her, how healthy are these pups. Keeping in mind the older a girl is the more problems she may encounter with the whelp.
Also, keep in mind are you willing to lose your little girl if you continue with this pregnancy. How sad that after all you've done to give her a wonderful rest of her life, that you lose her now.
Next are you in a position financially to handle everything should anything go wrong and even if nothing goes wrong it is an expense. Obtaining supplies and making sure the pups and mom have everything prior, during and after the whelp. Can you find reputable homes for these pups. And if these pups are not healthy (since you don't know their background) are you willing to take that responsibility.
Oh! If you don't work, that's great, but if you do are you able to take 12 weeks off. From the first due date (whenever that is) and until the pups are 12 weeks of age you life is not yours, you are tied to your home....
I'm not attempting to scare you but, give you the reality of what is ahead of you.
No matter what you decide, I wish you the best and hope you make the right decision for your girl.
Oh! There is also another thing that might be considered, closed pyometritis. It happens to older girls and usually around 3 weeks after their heat cycle. If this is the case, an emergency spay is in order.
