I like to keep both of mine cut rather short in that area.
I have a "Grooming Kit", which I rarely use, and just lightly slide
the electric clippers over the anal opening. Additionally, I trim
the longer hair at the base of their tails, which is within a half inch
of the area. That gives them a little space to evacuate, without
letting the material touch any hair back there.
Both mine are rather fastidious, and don't like any debris in that
area at all. I know when they need a trimming, by their "butt drag"
across the Carpet after they come in.
