 Some training may be needed
We have big yorkies, but still use steps. For a long time there was a trunk at the foot of our bed and they would get up on it then step up onto the bed. When we got new bedroom furniture we immediately went out and bought steps.
At first they wouldn't use them to go down. So I moved the steps to the location on the bed where they seemed to be getting down on their own. Then we used treats to coax them to use the steps during several practice sessions. When they finally began using the steps to get down on a regular basis, I moved them around to the other side of the bed.
My girl will still occasionally leap from the bed in a moment of extreme excitement, but 98% of the time they use the steps.
