Yes we've been to the vet dermatologist for two dogs. She saved Daisy's life by figuring out what was wrong with her (not just with her skin and allergies). She also treated Barney for a staph infection, after my regular vet's course of action failed.
If your dog has skin issues, I think going to a dermatologist can save time and money unless you have a vet who happens to be good at skin (and mine have not been).
