My maternal grandmother had a receipe handed down to her from my great great grandmother who lived on an actual plantation in the Old South. The recipe was called "Chocolate Gravy Breakfast Biscuits", which consisted of gravy apparently made the usual way except for the salt, had real European chocolate bits and butter melted into it(GGM had told her chocolate was very rare way back then) and served over sweetened, very light "soda biscuits". Grandmother always made this herself and served it to us grandchildren when we visited, using her breakfast china, and talked of her Grandmother and her many stories of the Old South. It was very, very sweet and rich tasting, really good to us since Grandmother made it herself.
Apparently back in GGM's day, this breakfast was a treat for the children's breakfast on Sunday's when they had been especially good the week before.
