That would work, or one can just paint over it with regular latex house paint (for walls) ... maybe a light sanding first to rough up any slick spots (helps the paint to stick). Painting is easier than staining, less labor intensive, and you can get water based paints so clean up is easy. But if it's in good enough shape that you're satisfied with, doing nothing to it really sounds good... (that's called the 'Rustic' look!)
