There are "former" Marines", just no "ex" Marines. We are going to try and get out to Quantico one day to visit the new Marine Corps Museum in Triangle, hit the O Club at Quantico, visit the Marine Shop in Q Town, and take a nice ride from the Battle of Bull Run all the way down to Petersburg with stops along the way at the major battle sites. Spent time doing that when I was stationed there for the Basic School. The noise you heard was no doubt from the new Lt's out in the field for a Fire Exercise. The time in Quantico at TBS (The Basic School) were the best 6 months I spent in the Corps as I made lifetime friends that I am still in contact with and still see. Also, no one was firing live ammo at me, and that was a nice break.
