Yea, using a set # (.5) is a easy way to do that, but...
The reducing a half pound from the low number, has
a MUCH greater impact than adding it to the larger.

Maybe a % would be a better way to do this.
Given that there are "some" anomolees...
How about a -10% or +10% respectively.

Or, would that be enough variance ?
