Glad to hear everyone is doing better... it does take time.
I would also suggest an alarm company, like ADT who does monitoring. The units come with many tricks and programs... like you set it to get a response from you at any given time, if there is no response, a silent alarm will sound and the company calls the house. If you do not answer, police are sent. If you answer, and forget your password, police are sent, if you give the wrong password intentionally, police are sent.
The operators are extremely discrete. "Do you need help?" No we're fine (lie). "Okay, just to verify, what is your password?" Bugs (another lie)."Okay, thank you and have a good evening." They call the police to respond silently to the address.
If you can get to the unit, there's a few ways to sound a silent alarm... like keying in the wrong code to turn the unit on or off. The alarm does not sound in the house, only at the police or monitoring station.
Some come with a battery operated remote that you can carry with you. And the fees are extremely reasonable...
At the very least, get the yard signs that warn a system is installed. One never knows, and most crooks will avoid alarm monitored homes.
Just some food for thought.... we got one to keep the teenagers in the house at night

(door and window alarms), and alarmed our sheds too due to the thieves in the area. It does help one sleep better and feel to safe. Plus you can check the status of all doors and windows from the unit, instead of running through the house all the time, to check and double check the locks.
There's also cameras you can get and set up to view online, so you could actually see the views of their house (inside and out) from your own computer to check on them.... I have 3, one is always set up to view from my front door out to the street (I can see the Mailman or UPS and their trucks from my TV or my computer.) Some doggy day cares have these cameras installed and allow the owners to log on and see what their dogs are doing all day long!
Can you tell I suffered a break-in at one time? It is unnerving to say the least.
Hugs to you and your people and pups!
