I also teach my dogs tricks not to have them perform (okay that's fun too) so they are mentally stimulated via learning...
started with the usual sit stay roll over and obedience and turned into dance, walk, wake up the kid with kisses, getting them to identify their toys and bring me various ones, holding a toy and having them find it...fun for the kids and myself.
