What kind of a brush are you using?
Beamer rarely gets mats now, but the other day he did have one and I was out of "Cowboy Magic" so I sprinkled cornstarch on it (learned about the cornstarch in the Grooming section)

The mat combed right out.
I wouldn't use a furminator on a Yorkie though. Yorkies do not have an undercoat. I just use Madan brushes and combs on Beamer,
