Vivian, you crack me up, but I understand, those couplers are very pretty!
I agree with your Puppy Preschool teacher's advice. Using shorter leashes, I believe, helps prevent tangling and gives you more control. When I see the boys start to move in opposite directions or cross lines (leashes) while sniffing, I say "Let's go!" and direct them back to their walk.
