Oh, I had a tiny - Jilly weighed 3 lbs. grown. She was the runt of the litter. It had been almost 5 years since I had lost my Yorkie, Scotty, who was small, so I really went looking for a big, healthy Yorkie pup that would not be likely to have as many health issues as I'd heard the small Yorkies can have. I was fortunate with Scotty in that though he was small, he was quite healthy but I didn't want to take a chance with a small Yorkie again. Despite my determination to buy "big", I bypassed other puppies the breeder had that were going to be bigger Yorkies because they weren't ready to go until they were 10 weeks. Once I saw Jilly, the runt and last of her litter, all of which I was told were normal-sized Yorkies, as were her mom and dad, both of which I saw, I wanted only her. She was only 2 1/2 lbs. at 4 1/2 mos. old, totally vulnerable and I just could not stand to see her maybe go to a home where she would not be treated like the fragile little baby that she was and maybe not be given all the very best care she might need. The breeder had kept her because she would not place her other than with a very cautious woman with no children at home, and as she knew me, I was approved for Jilly. My Jilly was a little sparkling gem, but she was fragile and very prone to health problems. She had terrible G-I problems and malabsorption syndrome and nearly died from that the first 4 mos. I had her. She jumped off of the bed once and really hurt herself. Out walking, a Dalmation came out of no where, Jilly spurted forward growling and barking on her leash while I was trying to grab her up and fend off the big dog and she was attacked, seriously injurying her, worse because she was so tiny, the vet said. Thank God I had a walking stick with me and got in a few swipes to run him off but that dog still chased us to the end of the block, only backing off when I would turn and brandish the cane as Jilly seized over and over. Another time she almost choked to death. We spent many days, nights and overnights at the vet's office but Jilly fought through all her problems with her typical toughness of spirit. She lived 12 1/2 years. I would not take anything for Jilly's lovely little life but I do not want another Yorkie under 5 lbs. It is just too painful to see a little dog you love dearly go through all the things tiny Jilly went through and it not affect you profoundly.
