Tell your girlfriend to hold the treats. As you wrote, every dog is different. With Maximo, I fed him at 7 am, 12 noon, and 5 pm. We have maintained this schedule since he was a pup. He often wanted to play games with his food so that I would end up hand feeding him almost each kibble. Mealtimes became training sessions where Max would perform for kibble rewards. You may want to try this to encourage your pups to eat.
