Just a thought...dog mace-they make distant spray guns now-not the pathetic ones that look like breath freshening spray and don't spray very far.
A BB gun shooting can get you in big trouble...despite defending your dogs on your own property...defending yourself or your dog etc isn't cruel-
paintball gun might be better option too-it definitely won't penetrate skin,lets it be known where and in general the dog was hit. Paintball guns pack quite a punch too...trust me...been patterned myself a few times
