There are many resources right here on YT, but you can find the information elsewhere as well.

A few things to start with would be:

How to recognize "red flags." The questions you should be asking of your breeder and the types of questions they should be asking you. Knowledge of the breed itself so you can spot marketing lies and things that don't seem quite right, ask for the right medical care, etc. Knowledge of your area's puppy lemon laws so you know what you are entitled too. In addition, familiarity with GOOD health contracts is a must. There are certain elements that should be included and other things that send up signals to get away. And much, much more! There is knowledge abound!

I learned what I know from doing a lot of reading, here on YT, but also books, the internet in general, etc.

Every buyer should prepare themselves if they don't want to get burned. You need to make yourself aware of all the gimmicks of the trade and pick out who you think is a reputable, upstanding breeder. Everyone forms their own conclusions and they are entitled to them, as I said, but everyone should also be sure to educate themselves before making that decision.

Things that I find to be poor qualities in a breeder, others may not find to be a problem and vice versa. For instance, I do not have a problem with perhaps ONE mix being bred as well as one purebred, but others do not like breeders who mix. Some think it is okay to get a pup at 10 weeks, but I do not want my pup to come home before 12. I do not agree with shipping for ANY reason (pick-ups, meet-ups, and drop offs are okay), while others feel differently depending on the circumstances, etc.

Everyone has different conclusions, but the education is a must.

The resources are out there. It is up to the buyer to utilize them. If they don't, then whatever results is their own doing as well. Caveat Emptor.
