I do think almost all kibble brands over-estimate the amount that should be fed. My active boys have never needed the recommended amount. When I was feeding Acana, my 8 pounder ate 3/4 cup a day. Granted, pups need a little more than an adult.
Half a cup for a pup a little over 3 pounds should be enough.
The size of the parents can help determine ultimate size of your pup, but it doesn't tell the whole story. You have to have a lot of background info about previous generations and even then, the best breeders will tell you that you can only make an educated guess about adult size.
