I guess alot would depend on the dogs, but by nature, female dogs are more territorial and males are more submissive. Another female will often 'challenge' the older one to determine who is the leader of the 'pack,' whereas males wouldn't. This is why in the wild, in wolf packs, the leader is always the most dominant female, not male. Again, I think alot depends on the dog. I.e., Cody and Trixie and Cody and Abby get along great. My father had Cody first. Trixie and Abby on the other hand have to handle each other is small doses to avoid bloodshed.
