The bruising and swelling are little bit more than normal in my experience (at least with my vet). Since your guy is 3 and I'm sure the testicles were a bit larger than a 6 month old puppy's is and since the incision is a little high they probably had a little difficulty pulling the "boys" out to clamp them and remove them. Did they give him any pain medicine? to help with the discomfort? Can you use a small ice pack for 20 minutes to help numb the area and reduce the swelling? I'm sure it would make him feel better. If at all possible keep him from licking the sutures. I saw an inflatable e-collar the other day at Petsmart and I thought how nice those are compared to the huge plastic ones most vets use.
