I have to say...you changed the pace by letting him come to bed. You can't expect him to understand, when it's not convenient for you. So, that bridge is burned.
How about this to resolve, if you are there he could sleep with you, if not and your mom finally came downstairs .....on nights you aren't there, why then can't he sleep with her?
