I do think pet dogs need as much human interaction as they can reasonably get. I started out by setting a 5-hour limit of alone time and kept that up for 5 years. At the least, I'd come home from work at lunchtime to feed them. Now, I occasionally push it to 8 hours for my adult dogs. I make it up to them by making the time we spend together quality time with walks, training and games. That's really key IMO. I don't want them sleeping all night, sleeping all day, then sleeping when I'm at home.
