I think it just takes patience and repetition. Eventually, Remy will probably get use to it. Betty Boop only protests if I make the topknot too tight. This is when she will rub her head on the carpet. I can remember as a little girl when my mother made my ponytails too tight.
I just have it in my head that it would give Betty Boop a headache if hers was too tight. Sometimes I have to re-do hers a couple of times each day because she plays so hard.
