Sounds like Toby wants to be the center of attention, or maybe the voice you use talking to your husband sounds serious to him. Max will do this when I call out for my father, whether he is on the other side of the room or in another part of the house. I don't know if Max thinks he is helping, but then he continues to bark so that dad and I can't speak. My theory is that Max doesn't like my "serious" or regular voice.

I did clicker training with her in class so with that in my case it was easier to "train" her not to whine. Since she seemed to whine from the moment she heard me get up until I picked her up, it was easy for me to get her to understand that she got a click and reward for being quiet.
I realize that barking and whining are not the same, but the concept is the same...quiet gets rewarded and they need to know that there is a difference between quiet and the noisy thing of either barking or whining. |
I had some success this morning quieting Max. The boys now have a little platform to sit on to look out the front window. Teddy quietly watched all of the activity in the street, but Max wanted to do his usual barking. I praised Teddy for sitting quietly, so Max was jealous and managed to control himself for the garbage truck and school buses. He broke when a dog walker went by.
