I have a HE front load washer and use it to was all my pee pads, soaker pads, belly bands, girl diapers, etc., and never, ever had a stinky washer.
I use he tide with febreeze when I have it, and other times, I use an eco friendly detergent with lavender in it. I use fabric softener and oxyclean with them and I don't have any trouble.

I have had my front load for over 10 years. Never has it had an odor and I don't leave doors open or anything. I wash normally.
