I have a really simple car seat. It is a million times better than having a dog wandering around in the car, sitting in your lap (in case of an accident the airbag force can kill them), standing up in your lap (dangerous on so many levels) or like Kaji likes, sitting by my feet right next to the clutch or gas. No, I've never driven with him there, but I am guilty of once having my munchkin in my lap. Anyway, the way his seat works is nothing fancy. The seat straps into the car seat, Kaji wears his harness, and I hook the car seat strap onto his harness. Super easy, super compact when I don't need it, and it's safe.

Personally I agree with your hubby that a stroller is over the top. That's just my personal opinion though. A car seat is a must have. It shouldn't fall into the want category like carriers and strollers do.
