It was great that you gave him a new home where he can be loved. I don't want to diminish that at all but I don't think any vet would seriously put a puppy to sleep just because the owner wanted him to. That would be abusive and I would think against ANY ethics and some laws. The vet would have probably suggested a no-kill shelter instead.
