I think it easier to use just a band at first, and get them use to that. Make sure it's not too tight, and always have some room between the band and the scalp. Next graduate to puppy bows and they are a single loop, after a few weeks, you can try a regular bow. Go slowly, and a small treat after grooming is helpful. This website has some tips.
