I then talked to someone else and they said to use small cuticle scissors so I tried them and they worked great. Just nip the dewclaw at the base with the point of the scissors and with a slight pull the whole dewclaw will come out. Most of the time the pups hardly make a sound. Now for the tails I use the scissor method and it is pretty painless. The pups might cry a little but not for long. I use clotisol from Revival and it makes all the difference in the world for stopping the bleeding. I would not be without it. I pour a little in the cap then when I cut a dewclaw or tail I just touch my finger in the Clotisol and apply immediately to the tail or dewclaw. Most of the time the puppies don't loose a single drop of blood.
Hi, I have been breeding Boxer puppies for 7 years and it has gotton so expensive with the vet on docking tails and removing the dews, I wanted to do it my self. I help the mom when shes having the pups and the only thing i'm not doing are the tails and dews. My last liter i had good success with banding the tails but have never done the dewclaws. I have pups now that are 2 days old, so when is the best time ? I have done a little reserch, just would like your advice.
Thanks
