I can understand that, and they did rehome it rather than putting it in a shelter.
The only thing is, that this new family had not signed the contract to NOT put it in a shelter. So I guess I would contact the family and explain the situation to them and tell them that they need to sign the contract or you will take them on "Judge Judy" JK

to get the puppy back.
Sueing does not always mean sueing for money. You can take them to small claims court to get the puppy back.
Ellen rehomed a dog that she had gotten from a shelter and the shelter pmade the people give it back.
