Wow that doesn't sound right at all. I would be extremely angry as they breached the contract. It honestly sounds like the puppy didn't turn out how they were expecting, perhaps not trained so they figure they would just start over with a new one.
I would demand to know the new owner's contact information. I would then contact them explain the situation, interview them and if the home wasn't suitable take the dog back and sue the first owners.
I can't stand the thought of not knowing where my pups go. They could have sold the pup to anyone and who knows what conditions the puppy is in now.
