Default Hacking Dog & Meds

Jack often makes a "hacking" sound when he gets really excited (which is normally twice a day) and will often sneeze. I have heard that yorkies often hack so I never really thought any of it. Today as I took Jack for his annual vet visit I brought the subject up. I assumed I was hoping for some reassurance but instead was told that he could be hacking for several reasons, such as household cleaners used to clean the floor, allergies, collapsed Trachea. He prescribed two medications (Baytril and Prednisone). As with any drug they have side effects. I am terrified of what I read on both yet more so of Prednisone! On one website I found the following... Prednisone Withdrawal in Dogs
"Being a steroid, prednisone has positive and negative effects. It is, therefore, important to gradually decrease the intake of prednisone dosage in dogs. Sudden stoppage of the administration of prednisone can be fatal."

Jack will need to take Prednisone for 10 days once a day then for once a day (every other day) for 10 times and after the 10th day every 3rd day until gone. He has only taken Prednisone once today and I am seriously considering stopping the meds. He's 3 1/2 yrs old and is a normal dog; I would hate to have to put him on meds if he absolutely does not need them! Does anyone have any experience with either meds?
