| Hacking Dog & Meds Jack often makes a "hacking" sound when he gets really excited (which is normally twice a day) and will often sneeze. I have heard that yorkies often hack so I never really thought any of it. Today as I took Jack for his annual vet visit I brought the subject up. I assumed I was hoping for some reassurance but instead was told that he could be hacking for several reasons, such as household cleaners used to clean the floor, allergies, collapsed Trachea. He prescribed two medications (Baytril and Prednisone). As with any drug they have side effects. I am terrified of what I read on both yet more so of Prednisone! On one website I found the following... Prednisone Withdrawal in Dogs "Being a steroid, prednisone has positive and negative effects. It is, therefore, important to gradually decrease the intake of prednisone dosage in dogs. Sudden stoppage of the administration of prednisone can be fatal." Jack will need to take Prednisone for 10 days once a day then for once a day (every other day) for 10 times and after the 10th day every 3rd day until gone. He has only taken Prednisone once today and I am seriously considering stopping the meds. He's 3 1/2 yrs old and is a normal dog; I would hate to have to put him on meds if he absolutely does not need them! Does anyone have any experience with either meds?

| The vet prescribed medication, but did he/she give you a diagnosis, explain the reason for the meds, and suggestions for follow up? I don't have any experience with these meds or Jack's symptoms, but if CT is a possibility, or allergies, seems to me that more tests should be done to either rule things out or diagnose definitively. I would be nervous giving meds without a definite course of action. Call your vet and ask for more information.

| It sounds exactly like what my Zada has....... collapsing trachea. This condition occurs primarily in older toy breeds, particularly Chihuahuas, Pomeranians and Toy Poodles, and occasionally in young dogs as a congenital defect. Tracheal collapse occurs because the C-shaped tracheal rings do no possess normal rigidity. As a result, the involved wall of the trachea collapses as the dog inhales. Obesity is a predisposing factor, as is chronic bronchitis. The principal sign of tracheal collapse is a characteristic "goose-honk" cough. The cough is made worse by stress and exertion. Coughing may also occur when the dog eats or drinks. Respiratory insufficiency develops as the disease progresses. Bronchodilator drugs such as Aminophylline or Theophylline are beneficial for many small dogs. Mild low-dose sedatives during stressful periods also are helpful. Cough suppressants and corticosteroids may be prescribed at times when the coughing is particularly severe. Respiratory infections require prompt treatment with antibiotics. My Zada has an almost collapsed tracheal and I don't take her very many places these days or she gets too excited and then wheezes for weeks afterward. When I do take her (it isn't to visit anyone, that tends to excite her too much) I give her Rescue Remedy before leaving home. It seems to really help keep her excitement under control.

| I forgot to mention that Jack had a slight fever @ 102.4 so it was slightly over the normal body temperature for dogs which is 101 I think, this is why I believe his antibiotics was prescribed (Baytril). I called the vet today and spoke to the vet's son who is also a vet. He explained every aspect of both drugs which I appreciated. Because Prednisone is an anit-inflammatory it should help in putting Jack's allergies at ease (that is if he has allergies). I will be taking Jack for a check up in the coming weeks to see if there has been any improvement. You mentioned that Zada wheezes when she gets really excited. Jack is the same way, I'll put him on a harness and go for a walk and the wheezing/hacking begins! Like you said it happens when he gets too excited or when someone comes to visit but normally stops after 3 min of greeting the person. Thank you both for sharing :-)

| Glad to hear that you had a good chat with the vet. Jack's wheezing/hacking on walks -- is he really straining/pulling in the harness? If that is the case, you may want to consider a different style harness and working with him to stop pulling. I had a mesh harness that Maximo really strained against and I found that it was putting stress on his neck. I switched to the Buddy Belt because it doesn't come anywhere near the neck. There are videos somewhere here on the site that demonstrates the differences between reverse sneezing and honking that is associated with CT. I'll look and post the links. Hope Jack feels better soon.

| Thanks for sharing! My husband swears that Jack doesn't sound anything like those dogs. The dog in the collapsed trachea video makes more of a honk sound whereas Jack makes a hack and when he hacks it’s a short hack. It actually sounded closest to the dog with kennel cough. He does this about 2 times a day and maybe a bit more if he gets too excited as I stated earlier. I went out and bought organic cleaner since I hear it isn’t as harsh as bleach, or pine-sol. We’ll see if it helps the little guy at all. As far as walks go yes he does put a lot of strain on the harness. The brand I use is puppia and it's also mesh. I've tried to keep him by my side at all times while we walk but he continues to pull and cough/hack. I'll look into the buddy belt :-) I've also considered getting a doggy stroller. He does great on walks but when he's pooped out he's done and will just sit there! lol such a stubborn boy he is. I figured I could let him walk and if he got tired I could put him in the stroller.

| Puppia harnesses are great, so the problem must be just that he is pulling/straining and exerting himself. I would ditch the Pine Sol for sure. Watered down bleach is fine, but watch the fumes for your sake and Jack's. I gave up harsh floor cleansers and started using diluted white vinegar wherever the doggies roam. Glad to hear that Jack does not sound like the CT dog.
