However, she was ranting at the breeder and the pet store and I do have an opinion on that. True story: I was Christmas shopping at the mall with my Yorkie and someone who saw him said they were going to get a Yorkie from that same place as the OP. I tried really hard to tell her that she should go to a reputable breeder and how and why... She just kept on snappin her gum and saying that she had one picked out and he was a TEACUP and she was gettin 'em. So this is ann ongoing problem I did not mean to imply that your breeder was dishonest with you. From what you wrote, I did get the impression that you were dissatisfied and I only said "if" the breeder was less than honest. Really, you are the one who brought it up. I know you can get a liver shunt puppy anywhere and then you're in love with him, so it's a terrible situation. Maybe BAT should be done before a puppy is sent off to a new home for everyone's sake even if it means getting the puppy a little later than 12 weeks.
To the OP: You are a shining example of why one should go to a reputable breeder. Since you are going the distance for this puppy, obviously you are a wonderful home and any breeder would be happy to entrust you with one of their puppies. If you had gone to a reputable breeder, they would be crying right along with you and helping you and the frustration part of this at least would be less, just like what 107Barney said happened to her. I know it's too late for that and you learned the hard way. In no way do I think you deserve what you got. It's not like that but consider that YT has a lot of members. Who knows, maybe the gum snapper at the mall will read this. |
I never said I was dissatisfied with the breeder. I said the situation with my dog from the breeder upset me more than the situation with my dog from a pet store. I stated in my later post that the issue with the breeder was resolved to my satisfaction. Yes, I did bring it up, but only to suggest that buying from a good breeder is not a guarantee that your dog will be free of problems. You hope it is, and if it is not, then a reputable breeder will stand behind the dog. However, at the end of the day, monetary compensation does not drive your dog to the vet, pay the emotional costs of a sick dog, dole out medicine when it needs it, or comfort the dog in its distress. Those are things done by the owner, not the breeder. As much as a breeder may care and share a tear or provide monetary compensation, the owner is the one emotionally bonded to the dog and ultimately responsible for its health and welfare. So many owners fail at that, so I (and many others on this sick and injured forum) try to empower owners to seek appropriate medical care rather than beat them up over a purchase they already made. I bought my pet store dogs 10 years ago, I have as much emotion and anger toward the puppy mill producing them as the day I had my eyes opened with an 8-week old puppy who I barely kept alive. Breeder or no breeder, she needed me, and I took that job very seriously. I will never forget nor regret the day I walked out of the pet store with her. And no breeder alive can replace her.
ETA: My dog from the YTCA breeder is not my liver shunt/MVD dog.
