I have found that my idea of "not too short" and the groomers definition of it don't always match. I've had better luck lately with saying "I want it cut to 1/2 an inch" or whatever. And to me, saying "I want his ears clipped" would suggest a quick pass with a pair of scissors versus shaving them or "tipping" them.
Groomers, like hairdressers, have their own language. I cried like a baby after Rhett got his first cut because it was so much shorter than I expected. And then when Scarlett got her first "do" she had to be clipped much shorter on her body because she had matted more than I realized (she's got super thick fur). And she wouldn't let the groomer near her face. She came out looking like her head was twice the size of her body. LOL. I called her my little bobble head for awhile.
