SInce I am not a breeder, I may be off base here, but, that is me. I someday may also get a terrific Corso from a family I know in Italy that has the best. Again, how would I get him here? Too large to fly under the seat. Heck, when we do fly with Maxine we get mean looks from the flight attendants because she is always out of the bag on our lap.
There was a link to an article that talked about mortality rates among shipped dogs, but I can't find it right now. The overall rate wasn't huge, and some breeds (especially bracheocephalic dogs) were more prone to succumbing than others. Some airlines also had better track records than others.

Obviously, there are going to be times when flying in a dog is necessary (out of the US as you proposed). But for the vast majority of pet owners, there are alternatives. "Shipping available" shouldn't be a selling point, IMO. One isn't ordering a pair of shoes out of a catalog when they are buying a pet.

I'll also admit I am biased. When moving cross country, I paid for my dad to fly out to where I was and drive my car to GA with my dogs so I wouldn't have to ship them. I wasn't going to put my dogs through that stress. They had a great time with him (and gained quite a bit of weight during the 4 day drive).
