There have been a few places I called that were charging around my price range, however for some reason I just didn't get a great feeling about it. This is a difficult process, and just want a happy & healthy pup!

And to Bentley-you purchased a puppy from there before as well? How much total did the puppy cost with shipping?
$1500 is a good price. I just paid that for my little Annie. I actually got a bit of discount for being a repeat customer. I could have bought a yorkie here for $600. But the comparison of hte puppies you get from the breeder selling for $600 and the ones sellig for $1500 show in a minute which one I wanted!! One was bread and lived inside the woman's home. Male & female were on premises and histories both pedigree and health were there for me to see. The puppies were adorable, clean and obviously well-cared for. The other breeder had her adults out in a cement building behind her house. Puppies were shown on the back porch of the home but reeked and were on soiled blankets. When asked to see their parents, this breeder made excuses why I could not see in the cement building. She was so vague about histories, it made me nervous. I don't know if she really remembered who the sire was, as she had to find the papers to tell me. The puppies were cute, and if I had seen them and only them, might have come home with one. But I knew quality was out there and I knew I would gladly pay a little more upfront for it. Those buying those $600 pups often find themselves with some hefty vet bills that make their pups much more expensive than mine before all is said and done.

I loved the comparison Lizzy made saying you pay $1500 or more for a laptop, flat screen or jewelry -- why not a loyal companion? You can buy an economy dog if you want .... but keep in mind that will also mean the breeder did not put much into the dog. A quality breeder has a lot more than $600 a pup invested before you buy them.

I am not saying there aren't wonderful pets created from bargain dogs -- there are! Even rescues can wind up being amazing family additions. But -- if you buy -- buy the breeder first to save the heartache and encourage good breeding, not greeding.
