Default Advice on re-training an 8 month old

Hey everyone, so I started Oliver on potty training at 10 weeks when he was really little. I had heard that crate training was very effective but I couldn't bare to leave him in a cage for most of the day. Well I was pretty successful with his potty training and had him on a strict schedule. Well he is now 8 months old and has been going on the carpet constantly and is off his schedule. I still go to take him out everyday on my lunch break like clockwork but he still has accidents OR I'll take him for a walk, he won't go at ALL and then as soon as I bring him in he goes! I was wondering if I should try starting over and just crate training him? I hate the thought of leaving him in a crate, especially since he's pretty much been roaming free for 8 months. Anyone have any advice on re-training an 8 month old pup? Is it too late for him to begin with crate training? Thanks!!
