I use newborn sized onsies on Ziva as winter shirts, that's about all we needed last winter. We put them on backward and cut them in a curve (shorter on belly, longer on back) like one of her t-shirts from Target. I overlap and stitch with a zigzag stitch. My daughter's getting a serger for Christmas

, so we will give that a try.
I have 20 newborn little boy onsies from a yardsale, if anyone wants to give me some direction I'd be happy to try to work out the cuts for " boy needs". (the NB size washed and dried wouldn't fit much over an 8 lb dog)
