I had the same situation with Sammy. He still goes crazy but not as bad. What I did sounds a little odd but it worked. Sammy would bark when I took the vacuum out of the closet before I even turned it on. So finally I left the vacuum in the living room for about 2 weeks and let him walk up to it and smell it etc. He still barks at it but on a scale of one to ten, he went from a ten to about a three/four. I keep him in the kitchen when I vacuum so he doesn't get hurt. There was a time when I was vacuuming with him in my arms to keep him calm.
